email received March 11 2006Dear Mary,
Yesterday, our dear lady greengrocer exhibited sticking plaster on almost every finger. She said she had “so many cuts” from the potatoes. When I asked incredulously how on earth she could get cuts from potatoes, she told me that they had been sprayed with a growth inhibitor to stop them sprouting!
The “cuts” must be splits or sores caused by the chemical used. They are locally grown potatoes and I haven’t made any more enquiries – but – if the chemical does that to Sara’s fingers, what will it do to our insides when we eat them?

PS Wash your potatoes well – even if they come from the farm down the road!
