Dear Colleague

Agriculture & Rural Development Committee investigation into the handling of the foot and mouth disease outbreak in Wales

The Agriculture and Rural Development Committee is to conduct a detailed scrutiny of the way in which Assembly Ministers handled the Foot and Mouth outbreak in Wales. The Committee intends to devote one or more of its public meetings in the New Year to questioning Assembly Ministers and to produce a short report identifying lessons that might be learned for the future.

To inform this scrutiny the Committee is inviting views from individuals and organisations affected by the foot and mouth disease outbreak in Wales. Should you feel there are specific questions or issues that the Committee should raise with Ministers, please send them by email to or post them to the address above to arrive by 21 January 2002.

During the outbreak a considerable part of the Committee's fortnightly meetings was set aside for detailed questioning of the Minister for Rural Affairs and three additional meetings were arranged during periods when the Assembly was not in session. The Committee would welcome any comments on the role it played during the outbreak and suggestions as to how this might have been improved.

This letter has been sent to those listed in annex A. Please feel free to pass a copy on to anyone else who may have an interest.

Yours sincerely
